5 Key Ingredients To A Successful Makeup Application

Hello beautiful!  Here are a few tips I've put together to help you achieve a fabulous makeup application. Keeping these 5 tips in mind will improve your makeup techniques & help you feel confident.

1. Clean Face: Yes, it seems that simple & it is!!!  Having a freshly cleaned face will help in the application of your makeup. Why you may ask?  This will aid in a smooth application of foundation, prevent bacterial buildup & control oil production.

2. Proper Brushes:  Using the correct brushes can take a makeup application to the next level. It will help properly blend eye shadows, contour with bronzer/blush on cheeks, apply foundation evenly & smooth out any excess product.  I prefer using professional brushes from MAC or Sephora because they last for years (when cleaned properly) & make my applications flawless.

3. Correct Foundation:  If you take anything away from this post, applying the proper foundation is one of the most influential pieces to a flawless face. Too light or too dark will defiantly stand out in person and be accentuated in pictures. The key is to first understand if you are a cool or warm tone & then go from there. I personally have to mix to foundations together to achieve my correct shade.

4. Correct Lighting:  Using the correct lighting while applying your makeup will help with blending your shadow & contouring your foundation.  Some lights can give off a warm or cool hues.  Also, make sure they are not casting shadows on your face. I prefer to use natural light to apply my makeup. I can see all the spots where I need to apply concealer for extra coverage & I blend my blush easier.

5. Enhancing Correctly: Not everyone needs to contour their cheekbones, brow area or forehead. Contouring & highlighting is made to enhance features & create the "ideal" oval face shape. For example, if your have deep set eyes, you do not want to highlight the brow area. Your eyes are already deep set so applying a highlighter will only accentuate the area. Knowing your face shape will help you decide what to contour/highlight & what to stay away from.

Enjoy ladies!  Always remember: feel fabulous & you'll look fabulous.

AS SEEN IN: Your Beauty Industry Magazine: MY TOP 5 MUST-HAVES

AS SEEN IN: Your Beauty Industry Magazine

My Top 5 Must-Haves

1.Hot Pink Tweezers & Lash glue - Not only do I use tweezers to apply lashes but
they help with those stray brow hairs.  One of my pet-peves is having un-manicured
brows at a photo shoot.  The brows are the tools that define the eye and when
properly manicured, can lift the lid, open the eye and transform the face overall.  Lash
glue is awesome for quick fixes on the go and adhering lashes to the eyes.
Tweezerman Tweezers & Duo Lash Glue are my favorites for both.
(www.tweezerman.com , MAC Stores)

2.Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner - The best brush cleaner I have ever used.  I helps
disinfect, clean and conditions the brushes.  It is made to increase the longevity of the
brushes and offers the sweet sent of vanilla.  (www.cinemasecrets.com)

3.Immaculate by Hourglass - This liquid to powder foundation I recently discovered
and is fabulous at shoots or everyday wear.  It is formulated to absorb oil and
camouflage imperfections while delivering a long-lasting matte finish all day. The oil-
free, humidity-proof, and water-resistant formula transforms instantly from liquid to
powder creating an all-day finish and never looks dull or flat.  Immaculate Liquid
Powder Foundation is infused with clinical levels of two powerful anti-aging
ingredients—phytostem edelweiss and lavandox.  In other words, it’s liquid magic!
(Sephora, online & in stores)

4.Too Faced Better Than False Lashes - HELLO FABULOUS LASHES!  I have found
the solution to short, fine lashes thanks to this double formula that kicks butt! I love
applying 2-3 coats of each formula to lengthen & fatten lashes.  The name really says
it all. (Sephora, online & in stores)

5.Make Up Forever Aqua Black - This waterproof formula lasts all day into the
evening without smudging or running.  The first time I used this was at an underwater
shoot and the super long cat-eyeliner didnʼt budge an inch!  I was amazed and
instantly fell in love.  My lids, like many clients, get oily during the day where it can
cause the liner to smudge on the upper lid.  Aqua Black will stay on all day and not
move until you cleanse your face in the evening.  (Sephora, online & in stores)

Romantic Wedding Updo

Everyone loves the look of a upswept undone updo.  Wether you are going out with a group of your gal pals or strutting across the red carpet, your hair is a statement and completes your look.  A current trend that you may have seen on the red carpet at the Golden Globes and Oscars is a new take on a finger waved updo.  This style can be worn to just about any event and lasts thought out the night without touch-ups. You may have noticed this loose but sexy style on Lauren Conrad, Amy Adams and Taylor Swift.  They updo styles for 2013 will be much softer, sexier and more laid back compared to the past few years.  You can easily take a day look and transform it into a night look by adding hairpieces, glamorous pins or stylish headbands.  Below is the step by step tutorial on how to achieve this upswept, undone updo.

1. Make sure your hair is 100% dry and you have the proper tools when achieving this look.  I prefer to use all my hot styling tools from Hot Tools.  The waver that we will be using to create this look and other curling tools can be purchased online or at local retailers.
2. Start by adding a protective gloss to the hair, working it from ends to mid shaft and comb though.  Professionals use Kenra Shine Serum because it evenly distributes, adds amazing shine and helps with thermal protection without making the hair greasy.
3. Create a deep side part then section the hair into three sections; two in front and one in back.
4. Using the waver tool, take two inch horizontal sections starting at the face-flattering point alongside the corner of the brow and work your way down the hair shaft.  You will continue though out all the sections keeping the wave pattern consistent.
5. Once finished, spray with Kenra Volume Hairspray #25 to set the waves.  After hair is set, take a small drop of the Kenra Shine Serum and “rake” though the waves with fingertips only.
6. Leaving the front two sections out, tease at root in the back section to create volume then comb into place a low ponytail and spray with Redken quick tease.  Secure on the opposite side of the front part.
7. Twist hair loosely around fingers to create a low bun and secure with bobby pins.  Back comb the front section (the one with less hair) and loosely pin back to create softness to the front.  Spray lightly with hairspray to set.
8. Backcomb the remaining section and spray root with Redken quick tease.  You may pin back some of this section depending upon on length of your hair and how much you prefer to be shown.
9. Spray entire updo with the Kenra Volume Hairspray to set and finish the styled look.
10. Here, you can add a fun clip or jeweled piece to your hair for an extra glamours look.

FEATURED ONLINE with EsteticaUSA Magazine

This article is written by one of the managing editors at EsteticaUSA Magazine, Marie Scarano.  I usually bombard Marie with my work from photo shoots, fashion shows and creative projects.  This time, I sent her information and photos about my hair show this past August.  Check out what she wrote:

WEBSITE: http://www.esteticamagazine.com/eventsnews/item/2327-kiara-mooney-raw-boston

When RAW summoned Boston-based hairstylist and make-up artist Kiara Mooney for their Kaleidoscope show, she responded with "Fearlessly Avant-Garde"

Every month, RAW, the indie arts organization for artists by artists, selects and showcases artists in film, fashion, music, art, performing art, hairstyling, makeup artistry and photography and accessories. RAW creates a one night showcase event that features local creativity in all of its flavors.
So when RAW contacted Kiara Mooney, she didn't hesitate. Kiara told Estetica why she called her collection “Fearlessly Avant-Garde”, saying, “I wanted to put on a show that offered different textures, larger than life hair and combinations of styles that people haven't seen. I actually connected two of the girls together with a braid and gave one of my models a necklace of hair! I didn't want any limits which is why I chose the word 'fearlessly'.”

Kiara worked closely with jewelry designer Tracy Belben, who created eight chain link bodysuits for the show. So while the models sometimes give a dark impression of being “chained” down, their hair expressed total freedom and rebellion.

“I wanted a certain dark feel to it and continued a certain 'teased & textured' look to all my models. I wanted some "roughness" to the look, almost "bad-ass" dark beauty,” explained the featured artist. And as if to mimic the chain jewelry, she even gave one of models a “veil” made of hair she hand wove ad hoc.

Mooney also draws inspiration from many sources for her hair, make-up and headpieces (featured in the Spring issue of EsteticaUSA), including shapes from nature, like feathers and seashells from local Cape Cod beaches.

A "raw" talent to be reckoned with, with a global and fearless vision of world beauty

How Does One Find Inspiration?

 <3 Inspiration <3

I am always asked "Kiara, where does you inspiration come from?  How do you create?"  My answer is simply look around you!  Everything is my inspiration!  From the colors that we over-look everyday, to other creative artists and craft stores that I pretty much live in.  I love different textures, patterns, colors and ways to mold pieces together.

I was visiting my cousin down in the Cape in early June where we stumbled across Megansett Beach.  This is where I got the fabulous idea to make a shell headpiece after chasing my little cousins around.  The shells had great texture & dimensional color to them so of course I would hot glue the crap out of them into a shape of a crown!!  Because thats what you do when you stumble across mountains of seashells :)  Also, who wouldn't want to be a sea princess for a day!!!  I had no use for this crown, no photo shoot planned but something just drew me to them.  I took a loverly lunch box that my cousin had tucked away in her car and spent over an hour and a half fishing though the shells.  I looked at texture, color pattern, shape and size.  I must have chosen over 300 shells for this headpiece.

This past June, I was asked to do hair & makeup for such a talented photographer +diana lemieux.  Her work pushes limits, explores her creative mind and has graced +Vogue Italia numerous times.  To sum it up, her work gives me goosebumps (which isn't very common when I look at photos nowadays)!!!  She informed me the fabulous +chelsey angers would be the model for the shoot & I must say she's one of the favorites.  Diana said the shoot will take place at a small beach in Gloucester MA at sunset.  This instantly made me happy because I knew this was the team I could use my headpiece with.  So the next day I started hot glueing the shells together and adding diamonds to the top of the piece for extra sparkle.

The shoot was a success, as if I was expecting anything less!  Especially since Diana was behind the lens & Chelsey was in front of the camera.  The following week Diana informed us that 3 of our pictures were accepted into +Vogue Italia !!!!  The pictures can be seen here!  Below is a sneak peak of the shoot!!

Glam Glow, Does It Really Work?

So I decided to purchase this lovely product after seeing it everywhere. I saw this product on other blogs, in stores and online and decided to do my own experiment. Can I just say I LOVE the packaging!! You open up to "Hello Sexy", how fun is that!!! I was a little bit skeptical because it was $69 for such a tiny bottle. They say you can get 17 full facials or 1000 spot treatments out of the jar which is a great savings for me (both time & money)!!! My days are usually filled with salon, photo shoots, runway shows & family/friend time . . . . Oh yeah and beauty sleep when I can!!!! Anyways, my little spa party started with the application, waiting time then finally results!!!

Application
-apply with your fingers to clean face
-spot treat in areas where treatment in needed
-apply mask to entire face

Waiting time
-5,10,15 or 20 mins (I chose 20 for maximum results)
-Pore-Max will reveal dots which show impurities in your skin (yuckie but I knew it was working when I saw them appearing)
-face tightened with the longer it sat on my skin (love that feeling)

Final results
-removed with warm water & sponge
-followed up with regular skin care regimen
-skin felt fresh, clean & glowing

Why is it so fabulous!! This treatment is chuck full of goodies!!! Acnecidic-6 (6 acid blend), pore-matrix technology (extreme absorption carbon), offers bio-life-cell-science (goodies like licorice root, cucumber, ivy & chamomile) and eucalyptus leaf. It helps with pores, problem skin, blemishes, pimples, breakouts, zits, spots, black & white heads, razor bumps & in-grown hairs (which is ideal for men). I purchased my product at Sephora in the Burlington Mall and couldn't wait to try it! I must say I loved it and work recommend it to anyone.

How To Create The Perfect Curl Everytime

How To Create The Perfect Curl In 10 Minutes!

Doing hair at RAW Boston fashion show OCT 2012
I know it's been said a million times before by everyone but, I can show you how to create the perfect curl in 10 minutes!!!!!  Yes I'm serious when I say 10 minutes!!!  Now if you have hair down to your butt, it may take 15 BUT for short bobs to elbow length hair it will take you 10 minutes to complete this look.
From my many years of experience in the industry (participating in fashion shows, photo shoots, bridal parties and working in the salon) I have picked up some really useful tips that I pass along to my clients and friends.  These tips help with your speed, offers a better understanding of the tools, what products you should be using and what you may be doing incorrectly.  I like to use a three products when I create any type of curl: serum or oil (depending on your hair texture), setting spray/hairspray and backcombing or teasing spray.  Yes, products are important but the tools are what achieve the desired curl.  The tools I use consist of: a curling iron (size/tool depends on what curl I want to achieve), sectioning clips, comb and pin curl clips (optional).  Below is a list of tools that I use to create all different types of curls:

The curling irons to the left are great to achieve the "beach wave" or a looser wave.  These are made by Hot Tools and are apart of the Nano Ceramic line.  They are tapered in at the end to give the curl a more "natural" look and offers a diverse curl.  The nano ceramic technology is designed to emit far infrared energy to seal the cuticle (adding shine and sleekness) and eliminating frizz leaving hair soft and shiny.  It also comes with a really cute glove that prevents you from burning your fingers while using the tool.  It is available in 2 sizes and can be purchased at +Sally Beauty Supply , on the Hot Tools website www.hottools.com or a really fun website named folica http://www.folica.com/tools/curling-irons/hot-tools-nano-ceramic-tapererd-curling-iron  where the irons are on sale (20-30% off) and offer FREE shipping.  The curling irons below can also be found on the websites menchioned above but are used for a fuller curl or a more volumous style.  The purple curling irons come in 5 different sizes that can suit any different texture and length.  They offer a heating level from 1-10 and heats up quickly while staying hot during styling. My clients feel more comfortable using this type of iron opposed to the marcel iron.  Its easier to manipulate thought out the hair and it comes with a grip on the top of the iron for stability.  The larger the barrel, the larger the curl pattern will be.  Its that simple!  So once you decide on what style you wish to achieve, it easier to pick the size of the barrel.  For a bob to shoulder length hair the medium size irons are best and for longer hairstyles the medium to extra large are suitable.  Once again, it depends upon your desired results so don't use a small iron when you want to achieve a large wave.  If you do, you will be creating more work for yourself in the end.

Creating A Beach Wave/Tight Wave
The first step to creating any type of curl is to understand you MUST protect your strands!  Yes, it's wonderful to have fun hairstyles and beautiful curls but if you don't protect your hair then you will cause damage that may take some time to reverse.  I prefer +Moroccan Oil or L'ANZA for my oils because they smell amazing, is easily absorbed into the hair and offers unbeatable shine!  The setting spray/hair spray will also help with protecting your hair from the heat.  I prefer Kendra Volume Spray 25 because it can act as a setting and styling spray.  It also allows your to run your figures though after you spray it without flaking or making the hair have a "white" cast (which is usually seen with clients who have darker hair).  Lastly, my favorite teasting or backcombing spray is produced by +redken and is called quick tease 15.  This product works magic and I am never without it at runway shows, photo shoots or my own beauty bar.

Waves I created for my model at a photo shoot using
my Hot Tools Nano Ceramic Curling Iron.
1. Add a few drops of serum into your hands and work from ends to 2" away from the top of your roots. (adding the oil/serum to your roots will cause you hair to become oily)
2.  Take two hair clips of your choosing and section your hair into 3 different sections, starting at the top and not clipping up the last section.
3.  Start with the bottom section lightly spraying it with setting spray and combing it so the product is evenly distributed.
4.  Start with the left side of hair by sectioning it into 2 sections (smaller sections for tighter waves/smaller iron for shorter hair).  Always WRAP hair around the iron AWAY from your face never towards your face and hold for 3-10 seconds (depending upon thickness of your hair/section and setting you chose for your iron).  By doing this, it will arrange the curls to "open up your face" looking fresh and ready for the day opposed to closing in causing hair to curl towards your face.  Repeat on the right side.
5.  Continue doing this though out all the sections and spray the entire head of curls once completed.
6.  Once you are done, take a small amount of serum/oil and run it though your hair to separate the curls and prevent static and frizz.  Depending upon your texture, you may want to spray your hair lightly with Kendra Volume Spray 25 once more to ensure your curls will stay the entire day.
7.  (OPTIONAL) For added volume at the root, take your Redken quick tease 15 and backcomb (gently please) with a teasing brush or comb though out the top few sections spraying each section lightly.  This will lock in your tease and make it last all day/night. Once you are finished teasing, lightly comb your hair back into place and spray one last time.

Creating A Bouncy Curl/Tight Curl
These steps are very similar to the ones above but here you use a different curling iron and technique.  Remember PROTECT THOSE STRANDS!!!

Bouncy Curls I created at a photo shoot
using my marcel iron
1-3.  Refer to steps above
4.  Start with the left side of hair be sectioning it into 2 sections (smaller sections for tighter curls/smaller iron for shorter hair).  Manipulate the hair though out the iron always curling AWAY from your face ad holding the top of the iron for stability.  By doing this, it will arrange the curls to "open up your face" looking fresh and ready for the day opposed to closing in causing hair to be in your face.  Repeat on the right side.
5.  Continue doing this thought out all the sections and spray the entire head of curls once completed.
6.  Once you are done, take a small amount of serum/oil and run it though your hair to separate the curls and prevent static and frizz.  Depending upon your texture you may want to spray your hair lightly with Kendra Volume Spray 25 once more to ensure your curls will stay the entire day.
7.  At this time you can pin (with your pin curl clips) the first two top sections of curls while you do your makeup, get dressed, drink some coffee or your daily morning routine.  This will give you body at the root, allow the curl to set ensuring your curls will stay bouncy all day and night.

TADA!!!!!  You now have beautiful waves in 10 minutes!!!  Now wasn't that easy??!??  Remember, you don't always have to use a curling iron for only curls, you can use them to do a fun bun, add volume to the root or add texture to the hair.  Check out my website www.kiaramooneyhmua.com or my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kiara.mooneys.page and follow me on Instagram under kiaramooney for beauty tips 24/7!!

Five Tips To A More Beautiful YOU

Five Tips To A More Beautiful YOU

Photo shoot at DH Studio's on Newbury Street, Boston MA
Thought out my 13 years in the beauty industry I am constantly asked "Kiara, make me look beautiful and work your magic".  Which, to be honest, are my favorite words to hear.  Having a client in my chair makes be revert back to my 14 year old self; excited, happy, passionate about what I do and ready to beautify.  The truth is every one of my clients are already their beautiful selves they just need me to give them the tools to make them confident.  I have found that you don't feel your most beautiful until you are comfortable with yourself inside and out.  I try and help my clients with both. So this is what I consider my 5 tips that I live by that help my clients and myself feel beautiful.

Tip #1:  Beauty starts from within.  Yes, I know it sounds simple but it's the best piece of advice I have ever received.  If you don't feel beautiful there's no makeup trick, hair do' or cloths that can fix it.  There is always a positive than can come from a negative.  For example, a lot of my clients come to me and talk about their oily skin.  I understand that oily skin can be a pain, I myself have it in my T-zone, but it will help prevent wrinkels in the future.  Clients also say that they have a "round face" which can be portrayed as "fat" or "big".  When you grow older our faces naturally thin out and become longer so if you have a rounder face now your face shape will age more gracefully. A round face shape does NOT equal FAT!!!! I stress to you, LOOK AT THE POSITIVE IN EVERY NEGATIVE.  You are who you are and you can't change it.  SO be happy with it and embrace it!  It sometimes takes a little longer for us to realzie our natural beauty but once you do it will allow you to view yourself differently.  I try every morning to look in the mirror and find something that I like about myself.  If you put positivity out to the world, positive things will happen and you will think positively thoughout the day.  Saying negative things will make you think negativitly and look at life in a negative way. Remember, "Happiness means loving yourself and being less concerned with the approval of others" - Owen Campbell Jr.

Tip #2: Have a good skin regimen.  Taking care of your skin now will pay off later.  Speak to your dermatologist or esticitian about a healthy skin regimen that you can easily follow.  Trying to follow something that doesn't fit your lifestyle, isn't made for your skin or opting out for the "cheaper" version may cause complications in the future.  I LOVE Bobbi Brown Cosmetics  skin care line.  I use her Soothing Cleansing Oil and Hydrating Face Tonic from her line.  I love what she believes in (I own two of her books and I suggest you check them out), adore her makeup line and I believe shes a great role model for any age.  You can find her lines at +Macy's  or online at http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com with FREE SHIPPING on any order $65 or more!! I also really like Cosmedix and used it when I needed to clear my clogged pores, acne and combination skin.  My favorite from the line is the Benefit Clean (cleanser for just about anyone), Opt Crystal (AAAAAmazing eye cream), Emulsion/Hydrate + (both daily moisturizer, Emulsion is heavier) and Mystic (can be used on any skin, my favorite product from the line) They also have kits that are suitable for anyone and save you some money.  You can find the line at http://www.cosmedix.com and they offer FREE SHIPPING for an order $100 or more.

Tip #3: Keep. It. Simple. A 5 minute makeup application goes a long way.  I often have clients that come in for my makeup lesson (I offer them at the Amore Salon) and ask how they can look their most beautiful in the least amount of time.  The truth is you don't need 25 steps to look amazing (hello! you have a life!), you can take a few that can make a big difference. I generally suggest to my clients in order to achieve an everday "natural look" you will need a following: 1 concealer, 1 primer, 1 foundation (any type that suits your skin), 1 eye shadow/cheek color that can double as both, 1 liner, 1 mascara and a lipstick/gloss/stain of your choosing.  Thats it, only seven porducts to make your feel fabulous in five minutes!  To many, it may sound so little but to a few it may sound a lot.  With those seven products you can work your own magic and face the day confident for work, school or a night out with some friends.  One of my favorite lines to use is made by one of my favorite people in the world, +Debra Macki.  She has products that actually work, are animal cruelty free, great selection of foundations to suit any skin type and offer super fun eye shadow and lip colors.  Check out her cosmetic boutique at http://debramacki.com/index.aspx. Lines that I also pick from include: +Mac Cosmetics+NARS Cosmetics+Urban Decay Cosmetics and +CHANEL.

Tip #4: Take care of your hair.  I can't tell you how many of my clients come to me after they purchase a professional product and notcie a tremendous difference in their hair.  Professional products 9 times out of 10 are made for professionals BY professionals.  They offer product lines that are made specifically for you to suit your everyday hair needs.  My favorite lines that I find in my beauty bar includes: +Brazilian Blowout, KMS California, Pravana, Paul Mitchell, +Moroccan Oil  and Kendra.  My ultimate favorite product in the world is one that I just discovered at a recent class: Brazilian Blowout's Acai Deep Conditioning Masque.  THIS WORKS WONDERS!!!!  Talk about a magic wand ladies & gentlemen!!!  It's an intense reconstructor, smoothes/strengthens the hair while infusing it with moisture.  It provides unbelievable shine, eliminates frizz, is color safe and offers UVA/UVB protection.  I usually wash my hair before bed, put it in leaving it overnight and rinse in the morning (in the summer time you can use this treatment at the beach!).  I cannot stress to you how much this masque has changed my clients hair ESPECIALLY when it is married with the Blowout Treatment.  My website dives into detail about The Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Treatment and how it has changed the lives of my clients by cutting their dry time in half, adding manageability and smoothes out the cuticle.  You can visit my website by clicking www.kiaramooneyhmua.com and check out my current deal on The Brazilian Blowout.

Tip #5: Wear clothes that make you feel good.  The size of your clothes isn't what makes you look fabulous, it's how they fit you.  I work with many designers based out of Boston and NYC.  They all have amazing lines that you can wear on and off the runway but my favorite designer I have worked with so far is +Daniel Hernández.  I wear this clothing in the salon, for a magazine launch, to a casual party, a night out on the town or just to feel amazing.  His designs fit me so well, are exquisitely made and I just feel so confident in them.  He was just  featured as the headliner at New York City Fashion Week for the LATINISTA 2013 Show.  Visit his website http://www.dhstudios.com to check out the latest and greatest from this amazing designer.  After you check out Daniel, scoot on over to visit Tracy Belben and her collections T*Racy Designs pair beautifully with Daniel's clothing.  I first met Tracy at the IIDA New England Fashion Show where Daniel and I offered our hair and makeup services to her team.  Visit her website by clicking the following link http://www.t-racy.com/, my favorite section is the Ready to Wear because every piece just looks fabulous paired with any everyday outfit.
